How old do you have to be to work for yourself?

I want to start my own landscaping business this summer. I asked my parents to chip in and get me a used lawn mower for Christmas and they did. I know it's cold right now but as soon as the weather breaks I am going to start passing out my business cards door to door in my neighborhood.

Will I have to pay taxes on the money I make? I mean, how will the government know anyway. I spent last summer looking for jobs all over only to end up broke the entire summer. A trip to the movies with me and my girlfriend runs about $50. I will not be stuck without any money this year.

Entrepreneurship is the best thing for a teenager. When you work for yourself you get a taste of what it is like to be your own boss, control your own hours, determine how much you get paid, everything.

So many people miss out on possible becoming rich because they can only see working for someone else or a big company. Wouldn't you want to be the one that "other people work for"? This is America people. We can do whatever we want as long as it's legal. Don't put yourself in a box.

As a teenager you have the luxury of taking the most risks because hopefully you do not have kids and a family yet. But even if you do, that's all the more reason to venture out and find a way to start your own business. Sell something, make something, do something for someone else. Be creative. Check your surroundings and look for a need that is not being met, then you meet it. Or you could take a look at how someone else is making money and think of ways to do it better!

I have been working for myself since I was 17 years old and I love it! The only way that you can completely fail is if you stop trying. Be your own boss. It is sooo worth it.

There is no age requirement for you to be self-employed. There are babies and little kids making money acting right now, even though there parents have control of the money right now.

So if you have the mind, energy and health to start your own business then go for it. You sound like you will be very successful. We are in a recession. If you can do a good job and cost less than the professional adults doing the landscaping then you could make a fortune. Well at least in your mind anyway.
